In the first of our Meet the Sponsor interviews, we catch up with Ian Pilbeam, owner and managing director the HR Dept Edinburgh & the Lothians and sponsor of our HR & Recruitment section
Here, industry expert Ian shares his passion for all things HR – as well as Edinburgh and the Lothians – and explains (in the featured video) how his company can help yours when it comes to getting the best out of your people and protecting your business interests at the same time.
Q: What is the HR Dept?
A: We are passionate about delivering a local, practical and pragmatic outsourced HR service to small and medium-sized businesses whose owners and managers just want to get it right when it comes to employing people.
Getting it right means getting the best out of your people, protecting your business and accessing straight-forward advice which can help you navigate through the technical minefield and do what’s right for you and your business.
We are getting ready to celebrate our 1,000th day in business (and personally my 30th year in HR) after what has been a wonderful and very rewarding couple of years. During this time, we have built up a strong client base, from scaffolders to Bishops, and we’re looking forward to building on this success.
Q: Where are you based?
A: We have a lovely sunny office in East Lothian for our expanding team. When I’m not there, I’m anywhere and everywhere in Edinburgh and the Lothians working with our great base of clients.
I love living here. We have the best of all worlds, hills, beaches and one of the world’s greatest cities. Working with local businesses means I get to see close up the diversity of the talent across the Lothians.
Q: Which Government measure would have best supported your business in the early years?
A: Greater access to low cost finance, especially in early years, would enable businesses to unlock the potential of the SME market.
Q: What does the HR Dept have in store for the future?
A: We are fast becoming a go-to HR service for small and medium sized businesses in Edinburgh and the Lothians. We are creating an HR Dept ‘family’ of businesses that we help thrive by providing the service they need, when they need it, at a fraction of the cost of having an in-house HR manager.
We also work really well with in-house HR, providing additional resource and expertise where it’s needed. We’re really excited about the prospect of growing our client base further and helping businesses succeed through investing in people.
