Edinburgh Airport smashes Scottish record as passenger numbers soar

June 2016 passenger numbers highest on record

Edinburgh Airport’s June 2016 passenger numbers have broken the Scottish record.
It’s latest figures released today (Monday, 11 July) show that 1,173,953 passengers travelled through the airport last month, representing a 6.8% increase on the same month last year. This means last month was the busiest ever June at a Scottish airport.
Gordon Dewar, Edinburgh Airport’s chief executive, said: “June’s record breaking passenger numbers make this another great month at Edinburgh Airport.
“Our continual growth underlines the need for Edinburgh Airport to adapt so we can accommodate the ever increasing number of people wanting to fly in and out of Scotland’s capital city.
“It’s for this reason that we are engaged in the initial consultation stage of an Airspace Change Programme and I would encourage everyone to log on to letsgofurther.com and have their say to help the design of future flight path changes.”
Edinburgh Airport has attributed its increase in international passenger numbers to an increase in services and a number of new routes:
  • easyJet’s new Stuttgart (launched in Nov 15), Vienna and Venice services (launched Feb 16) boosted passenger numbers vs June 2015
  • Ryanair’s Copenhagen service was new from November 2015. More flights operated to Barcelona, Alicante, Malta, Palma de Mallorca and Krakow, boosting passenger numbers compared to June 2015
  • Etihad operated daily in June 2016 after launching on 8 June 2015
  • Last June Vueling only operated services to Barcelona, in June 2016 they also operated services to Rome Fiumicino which launched on 29 March (3 per week), Paris Orly which launched on 12 March 4 per week and Alicante which launched on 16 June 3 per week
