Celebrating Scottish Food & Drink Fortnight 2016
More than 250 representatives from Scotland’s booming brewing sector have snapped up tickets to attend the first ever Scottish Beer Awards which take place in Edinburgh in three weeks’ time.
According to organisers, the event, which is being sponsored by ALDI, is now fast approaching a sell-out success and has received broad support from the industry after it received entries from 31 breweries and 154 beers, all brewed in Scotland.
The programme will be hosted by Scottish comedian, foodie and self-proclaimed beer lover, Hardeep Singh Kohli, who said: “Scottish beer has never been so exciting.
“From the artisan brewers to the big players it feels like a revolution has started. I just hope it never ends.”
Following a judging session held in May, the announcement on the winners has been eagerly awaited.
Hilary Jones, chair of the judging panel, said: “There is great excitement in the sector both among the judging panel and the entrants to hear who will pick up the awards on the night.
“As one of the very few people who already know the outcome, I can guarantee that we will be announcing some outstanding achievements.
“In the course of this competition, it has been a privilege and an honour to learn more about the 31 breweries.
“All the evidence suggests that Scotland is leading the way with a high quality and incredibly talented pool of brewers who have tremendous enthusiasm for complete perfection in the job.
“We very much look forward to staging a fitting celebration for our hard working brewers who deserve recognition for outstanding achievement throughout the year.”
Seven gold medal awards will be presented to the beers which scored the highest marks during a blind tasting session carried out by an expert judging panel.
Another 14 awards are also up for grabs for beers which in silver and bronze positions.
A further eight awards will be presented for business performance in the fields of export, marketing and product development.
As well as support from ALDI, the Scottish Beer Awards are being sponsored by the Craft Beer Clan of Scotland, Ross & Brown, and Maclay Murray Spens.
