Edinburgh’s £13 million Orwell Terrace development opens for business

Students move into £13 million development in Dalry 

The first Edinburgh Napier University students have moved into a new £13 million accommodation development on the site of a former warehouse in the city’s Dalry area.
The 234 en suite student bedrooms were built in four separate blocks in Orwell Terrace, within easy reach of the university’s three campuses and the shops, bars and restaurants of the city centre.

The development – which complements the university’s modern accommodation at Bainfield and Slateford – also boasts landscaped communal areas and cycle stores, and good access to public transport, including Haymarket railway station.
The blocks – named after the Edinburgh hills – have been called Carnethy House, Caerketton House, East Kip House and Scald Law House.
Alex Ratcliffe, Edinburgh Napier’s head of student accommodation, confirmed the site had met all building control requirements and had now opened its doors to students.
As a new feature with the university’s accommodation, the Orwell Terrace development incorporates twin rooms, giving students the opportunity to share a bedroom.
Ratcliffe said:  “While twin rooms are new to Edinburgh Napier, this type of dwelling is commonplace in America, Australia and Asia. The twin rooms were extremely attractive and were sold out as soon as our application system went live!
“Quality and choice of accommodation are a major factor for students when they are deciding where to study. The university recognises this and by investing in three new sites in the last three years, we hope to enhance the experience of students who come to Edinburgh Napier.”
The Orwell Terrace development saw the latest offsite construction methods used to build high quality and environmentally efficient accommodation.
