Coca Cola fempreneurship programme to empower 5 million women by 2020

Female entrepreneurs encouraged to join international Coca Cola programme designed to empower five million women worldwide

Aspiring female food and drink entrepreneurs in Scotland are being encouraged to sign up for a new global initiative from Coca Cola which has set out to empower 5 million women by 2020.
They are invited to apply for the 5by20 programme which is being supported by Dundee charity Showcase the Street and has launched in Scotland for the first time to help fempreneurs launch their own catering businesses.
The new programme, whose launch follows a successful pilot in which six women have already been put through their paces, is offering budding female entrepreneurs the opportunity to learn the skills needed to set up their own businesses as part of a six-week intensive course which will include classes in catering and business.
The initiative is being run at a custom-built facility within the current Showcase the Street complex which has been transformed into The Coke Café. The investment from Coca-Cola Great Britain has helped create the state of the art new kitchen and classroom facilities.
Jennifer Grubb, who dreams of setting up her own online business, was one of the women to take part in the pilot. She joined the project to meet like-minded women and gain the confidence needed to become a business owner.
She said: “I have always dreamed of launching an online community where people can share healthy, family focused recipes and resources and was excited to hear the programme had started on my doorstep. I have learned so much during the six weeks and I can’t wait to get started!”
Charlotte Oades, global director of Women’s Economic Empowerment at The Coca-Cola Company, said: “We’re delighted to bring the 5by20 programme to Dundee and help more women realise their dream of setting up their own business. We hope the course will give women the practical skills, as well as the confidence to go on and make their dreams a reality. The 5by20 programme touches women across the world; from Brazil to Indonesia, and it’s great to see it come to Scotland.”
Fergus Storrier of Showcase the Street, which offers dance classes in Dundee, said: “Showcase the Street is extremely grateful and excited to be part of the 5by20 programme. Our work is targeted at making the lives of people in our community better.
“The legacy from the investment in Dundee will be long-term as the coffee shop will eventually allow the project to become self-sustaining and, in turn, will continue to support local women to achieve positive results in the future.”
The next course will get under way in mid-October with further course dates to be announced. To be eligible to apply to take part in the programme, women must be currently living in Dundee.
