Boyd Legal appoints ‘big hitting’ finance director to city HQ

Gerry Cockburn – formerly of the Faculty of Advocates – to head up the legal firm’s finance division in Edinburgh

Boyd Legal has appointed experienced finance director Gerry Cockburn to its Edinburgh team.
Cockburn, who was Head of Finance at the Faculty of Advocates after also previously holding key roles at Gilson Gray and Capita-owned Optima Legal Services, will head up the firm’s finance division after clocking up 25 years’ industry expertise.

He said: “I’ve opted to make the permanent move to Boyd after experiencing the firm during recent consultancy work.
“I was struck immediately by the culture and feel that the timing for the switch is perfect, just as the firm is beginning to really establish itself within the Scottish legal and business landscape.
“There is an opportunity to build something special here – and I’m grateful to Peter Boyd and his team for bringing me into the such a key role.”
Having started his career with Caesar & Howie Solicitors & Estate Agents, Cockburn moved to Gold’s Solicitors before taking up the role as Head of Finance at the Faculty of Advocates – which he served for two years.
He then made the switch to Optima Legal Services, remaining as Financial Controller after its acquisition by Capita plc – where he established key contacts with the major Scottish banking groups.
His most recent role within a legal firm was at Gilson Gray, helping it launch and develop in its crucial early years.
Cockburn, a native of Torphichen in West Lothian, has now been tasked with heading up Boyd’s accounts team – and will be central to the firm’s business strategy going forward.
Peter Boyd, Managing Partner at Boyd Legal, said: “Gerry is a big hitter in the sector and we are thrilled to have him on the books here – where he will play a critical role within the business. It also gives us the financial disciplines to start bringing in Senior Associate Solicitors into equity release which is important for the future of the business.
“The clear focus on excellent service is beginning to really resonate with the business community who are seeking a more flexible, tailored and personal service than is often offered by the largest firms.”
The appointment follows last year’s merger with Kirkcaldy-based Gibson & Spears, Dow & Son, and highlights Boyd Legal’s focus to drive forward its growth plans.
Having recently undertaken a strategic review of its operations to support its drive for further growth, Boyd says it’s committed to further establishing itself as a major player in the field.
With a flagship office in Edinburgh, Boyd Legal also has regional hubs across Scotland – in Kirkcaldy, Glasgow, Inverness and Aberdeen.
