Num Num Teething Jewellery has been shortlisted for two national magazine awards
An Edinburgh start-up which makes teething jewellery has been shortlisted in two categories of the national Mumii Awards.
Num Num Teething Jewellery, which was founded by Edinburgh mum Jen Downie, has been nominated in the Teething Jewellery and Baby Wearing Accessory categories of the 2017 Best Baby and Toddler Gear Awards organised by mums’ magazine Mumii.
As well as her nominations in the afore-stated categories, Downie is up for a consumer choice award and is appealing for locals to lend their support by casting their votes in her favour.
The Edinburgh mumpreneur won last year’s Small Business Sunday social media competition run by BBC Dragon Theo Paphitis and says that, since then, the business has gone from strength to strength, with online sales increasing and Num Num products now stocked in 15 shops across the UK, including Kiddiecare, which is one of the UK’s largest retailers.
She says she launched the business two years ago after she was “unable to find a suitable and stylish necklace to wear” when her daughter, Hannah, started teething.
Downie said: “It’s fantastic to get shortlisted for two major awards in one of the UK’s most well-known competitions for this sector and against much larger companies.
“We have been working for the past year to increase our sales online as well as in outlets in Edinburgh and around the UK. It’s been going really well so hopefully this is another step on the road to growing the company in the future.
“Hopefully we can pick up one of the awards when they are announced and I hope the people of Edinburgh will support a local company when the vote for the consumer award opens to the public next month.”
Jo Studholme, Editor of Mumii, which organises the awards, said: “We are thrilled to announce the shortlisted products for this year’s Best Baby and Toddler Gear Awards. This is the 5th year of the Awards and the shortlisted products really have lifted the bench mark meaning that the next stage of thorough consumer testing is going to be a tough one for all those involved.”
Downie’s necklaces can be found in Pippin at Haymarket, Willow Boutique in Stockbridge, and Maddie & Marks in Blackhall, as well as being available online.
