In the early days of their relationship, Rebecca battled alcoholism which meant spending more time in rehab. Thus, Paul had the initial custody of Meadow.

However, things came crumbling down for the Paul family when Paul Walker got into an unexpected and extremely surprising accident. He was in the passenger seat of a car which his friend was driving when they crashed into a lamppost, the car caught fire, and Paul died on the spot. Paul had severe burns. After Paul’s demise, his mother Cheryl and Rebecca Soteros got into a custody battle for the custody of Meadow. In documents and before his death, Paul had kept his mother as the legal guardian of Meadow.
