Winter is a time of year that, for many, is intensely depressing. Cold and miserable weather, shorter daylight hours, and a bill from HMRC – it’s easy to see why so many associate the season with a foul mood that lasts for several months.
While taxes might be inevitable, there’s something we can do to deal with the poor weather, and that’s to take flight to a sunnier clime.
Best warm places to spend winter
A few destinations stand out as worth visiting.
Hawaii, USA
For most Americans, Hawaii is a perfect holiday destination. It’s a tropical island paradise, thousands of miles from home – and yet just about everyone speaks perfect English. It’s also pleasantly warm, even in December. Despite this, the days are a little bit shorter – but this just means that you won’t have to rise early to enjoy the amazing spectacle of sunrise over the Pacific.
Andalucía, Spain
The Iberian Peninsula enjoys year-round spectacular sunshine, as well as world-famous cuisine. There are more than eight hundred kilometers of coastline to explore, as well as two national parks and a collection of amazing historic cities. If you’re touring the region, with the help of a company like P&O Cruises, then you’ll want to make Andalucía part of the trip.
Miami, USA
If you don’t want to take a trip out to the Pacific, then you might consider the southernmost tip of mainland USA. There’s a lot to like about Miami. Even when the weather is frightful a few hundred miles north, the sunshine will be reliably blistering in this part of the country. A selection of amazing beaches, a vibrant nightlife, and the nearby lure of the Disney World resorts all add up to an amazing way to spend winter.
Riviera Maya, Mexico
This is a stretch of Mexican coastline, just south of the famous Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. It’s a haven for tourists in search of pure white sand, clear blue waters, and year-round sunshine. As well as the beaches, there’s a selection of impressive Mayan ruins, including the famous city of Tulum, which dates all the way back to 564 AD.
Lisbon, Portugal
If you’re going to be travelling to Portugal, then winter is an excellent time to do it. The crowds will be much thinner at this time of year, but you’ll still enjoy a little bit of sunshine. You can expect the temperatures to get up to fifteen degrees – which almost qualifies as t-shirt weather if you’re constantly on the move.
Costa Rica
Costa Rica is truly gorgeous at every time of year. On the coasts, you can expect sunbathing temperatures, but it gets a little cooler if you’re going to be wandering through the amazing cloud forests in Monteverde.
