A contraflow traffic management system is currently underway in Edinburgh following a rock fall on Queensferry Road between Clermiston Road North and Quality Street on the north side of the road and footway.
A large piece of rock about 1.5 foot in diameter dislodged and fell from the adjacent rock face and shattered across the footpath and road.
On initial inspection several areas on rock face are loose due to vegetation growth of roots and general cracks thought to be due to weathering are evident.
An experienced contractor is being arranged at short notice to survey and remove loose rocks by accessing the rock face by rope and harness from tomorrow onwards. An update on the extent and duration of the works will follow in due course.
The bus stop is closed on the north side and there is a ‘Footpath Closed’ sign on Quality street, as well as an advance warning sign near Drumbrae Drive at Clermiston Road
Traffic management, cones signs and barriers are currently being put in place to make safe the area for road users. The city bound lane will be closed until the issue is resolved.
The footway on the north side of Queensferry Road between Clermiston Road North and Quality Street will remain closed to pedestrians until the issue is resolved.
Pedestrians travelling city bound are required to divert by using the pedestrian crossing at Clermiston Road North junction, travelling along the south footway of Queensferry Road and crossing back over the north footway of Queensferry Road at Quality street.
North and west-bound pedestrians are to follow the opposite route.
The following additional traffic management set up is currently being assessed for suitability at this location by a traffic management consultant in order to reduce traffic congestion, an update will follow in due course:-
The remaining three lanes may be divided to allow two lanes city bound, one lane north/ west bound in the morning to accommodate the evening peak times.
In the afternoon and the evening the traffic management may be changed to two lanes north / west bound and one way city bound to accommodate the evening peak times.
The contraflow traffic management system is indicated on the plans above and below and will remain in situ until the resolution of the loose rock issue.
