Props supplied by a vintage specialist based in Fife are to appear in the new Hollywood blockbuster ‘Pan’.
Vintage iron padlocks used in a dungeon scene are among the items sold to film producers by Cupar-based Scaramanga, which also specialises in its own-brand leather bags and satchels.
The contract is the latest in a series of film ‘roles’ for Scaramanga, which also supplied props to The Hobbit and Maleficent.
The firm is marking its latest Hollywood movie props success with a special Pan-themed display in its St Andrews store and preparing for fans of pirate style and the movie to come searching for their own treasure chests in their stores and on their website.
But supplying Tinseltown with hard-to-find authentic vintage items is not new to the award-winning Fife firm.
Previous Hollywood customers include Disney fantasy Maleficent starring Angelia Jolie – Scaramanga provided more than 100 medieval-looking pieces including decorated vintage trunks, chests and homewares – and the Lord of the Rings blockbuster The Hobbit, in which the firm supplied the antique brass padlocks in Bilbo’s house.
The Fife firm also supplied one of their iconic leather bags to 2014 Tom Cruise movie Edge of Tomorrow, but it didn’t make it onto the big screen.
The company, which sells homewares online as well as in its shops in Cupar, St Andrews and Edinburgh, is also used as a supplier of vintage props for TV shows including Strictly Come Dancing and 60 Minute Makeover.
Owner Carl Morenikeji said: “Given our reputation as a specialist in authentic vintage items, we were naturally delighted, if not entirely surprised, that they came to us for authentic vintage padlocks to fit in with the Victorian Gothic style of the movie.
“We’re hoping more fans of authentic vintage pirate-style items, like treasure chests and trunks – of which we have scores in stock at any time, will come to us as a result.
“I caught one of the preview screenings last weekend and it shivered my timbers to see our padlocks used on the big screen. Peter Pan is a classic children’s story and the new film adds a dark, moody twist to what has always been an action-packed story.”
Movie and vintage fans can see the full range of vintage homewares, including many with the same style as those seen in the Neverland sequences of the movie, on Scaramanga’s website.
The movie goes on general release in the UK today [Friday, October 16] and is set to revive the family favourite story of the boy who never grew up, with a prequel to Scots author JM Barrie’s classic fairytale Peter Pan.
The new release tells the story of how orphan Peter is transported to Neverland while searching for his mother but then teams up with James Hook and gets involved in some swashbuckling adventures. Sure to hook the attention of children, and adults, worldwide, it will bring classic Victorian styles back into prominence.
