New daily flights between Inverness and Heathrow announced earlier this week by British Airways (BA) will bring a significant boost to the Highlands & Islands economy, according to the Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI).
The new BA service set to start in May 2016 will help to support current and future business growth in the region and enable more tourists to visit, says SCDI’s Highlands & Islands regional director Fraser Grieve.
He said: “This is a fantastic announcement that BA are to introduce an Inverness to Heathrow flight in 2016 and will bring a great boost to the Highlands and Islands economy. Research conducted by SCDI only a few years ago highlighted how important a link with Heathrow would be, and the importance of connectivity to and through the London hub for businesses and access to international markets.
“We know from studies that at least 70,000 passengers per annum were lost from Inverness Airport through the lack of a direct link to Heathrow, and this new route will therefore support current & future business growth in the region and also enable more tourists to visit.”
